Rovers to host blockbuste­r clash

FQPL 3 Men – Rockville Rovers v St Albans (7pm, Saturday May 13 | Captain Cook Park, Toowoomba)

Ladder leaders St Albans travel to Captain Cook Oval this weekend to face third placed Rockville Rovers in a blockbuste­r match of the week.

Hot from their victory against West Wanderers last round, the newly establishe­d leaders will have to be at their best against a Rockville side that possesses one of the strongest attacking threats in the league.

The previous encounter between the sides ended in a 5-4 victory to Rockville earlier this season.

FQPL 3 Women – Highfields FC Gold v Rockville Rovers Blue (5pm, Saturday 13 May | Highfields Sport Recreation Park, Highfields)

Two of the best sides in the league go head-to-head this weekend as top of the table Highfields Gold takes on thirdplace­d Rockville Rovers Blue at Highfields Sport Recreation Park.

Highfields Gold has won every match this season, but faces one its toughest challenges on Saturday against the high-flying Rockville side, which is on a four-match winning streak.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP

With the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 less than 80 days away, Football Queensland (FQ) has announced dates for the 2023 Female Football Week, a nationwide initiative to showcase the women’s game.

Female Football Week will run from Friday, May 19 to Sunday, May 28, signalling a significan­t year ahead in women’s football as the biggest global women’s sporting event comes to Australia, and acknowledg­ing the contributi­ons of women and girls across the football community.

In the lead-up to this week of celebratio­n, FQ’s Women’s Football Round will kick off on Friday, May 12, coinciding with Mother’s Day and delivering memorable moments.

Clubs across the state will be involved in the festivitie­s of Female Football Week with regional activation­s and events such as club barbecues, mentor programs, come-and-try days and more.

To shine a spotlight and recognise the outstandin­g achievemen­ts and efforts of individual­s and clubs across the state, Football Queensland called for nomination­s for the 2023 Female Football Week awards, with nomination­s having closed on Wednesday.

COACH OF THE MONTH

FQPL Darling Downs men – Jamie McMillan, Willowburn FC, Nick Rundle, St Albans.

Joint winners for the FQPL men’s competitio­n, Jamie and Nick led their sides to an undefeated month, winning two out of three matches in April, with the third game being a draw between their sides.

Jamie’s Willowburn side scored five goals and only conceded one goal in April, while Nick’s St Albans team scored nine goals and conceded four goals.

FQPL Darling Downs women – Cameron Watt, Highfields FC Gold.

Cameron led his side through a perfect month, winning all three matches.

They currently occupy top spot in the premier women’s football competitio­n on the Darling Downs.

Cameron’s Highfields Gold side scored a massive 20 goals and only conceded two.

GIRLS UNITED COME-AND-TRY DAY

Football Queensland is hosting a free Girls United come-and-try session on Friday at Captain Cook Oval in Toowoomba for women and girls aged 15 and above who may not have the time for traditiona­l football training and matches.

Girls United social football is all about creating fun, relaxed and social football environmen­ts for women and girls to boost their confidence, build fitness and make friends, with women and girls of all skill and experience levels encouraged to attend, with sessions focusing on fun and enjoyment.

The free come-and-try session starts at 6.30pm on Friday, May 12 at Captain Cook Oval, field 2.
