Rain event strikes region

South East Queensland was hit with significant rainfall overnight Monday with parts recording up to 155mm, with flash flooding affecting the Gold Coast.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Felim Hanniffy said the heaviest rainfall was around the Gold Coast and Brisbane. He said Brisbane hit between 50 to 80mm while the Gold Coast got past 100mm and up to 155mm.

Toowoomba received 56.6mm, Oakey 49mm and Warwick 42.6mm.

Gold Coast Police and Emergency services were called after reports of three dogs being swept away at Weedons Crossing Bridge in Nerang about 8am yesterday.

Emergency services were able to retrieve two dogs, however, they have not been able to find the third — a black labrador retriever.

The owner has been reunited with two of the dogs.

A Gold Coast City Council spokesperson said minor flash flooding occurred at Loders Creek in Southport.

“Road closures are likely this morning and motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution,’ they said.

“If it’s flooded, forget it.” Lanes on the Pacific Motorway at Helensvale were affected by the flooding and residents were urged to proceed with caution.

“We’ve seen the worst of the rainfall. The heaviest of the rain has already started easing and the rain around Brisbane will go further down south,” Mr Hanniffy said.

“The rainfall will tend to get a bit more fragmented and showery, then really the next few days will be a contrast with dry and sunny conditions.”

Mr Hanniffy said the wild weather was caused by a trough with a mid-low-pressure system.
