BEHIND SCENES OF ‘CULT’ INSPIRED FILM CLIP
After launching their business three years ago, Paddy Long and Joshua Willson never anticipated their work would feature on Australia’s longest running music video program.
The duo behind Rare Squid Creative’s latest project was a film clip shot for Detuned by experimental electronic artist Tantalon.
It marks the second time the Brisbane-based DJ has worked alongside the two Toowoomba creatives, with both videos filmed in locations across the region.
Filming took place inside City Cave, an Anechoic Chamber in UniSQ’s engineering department, the Civic Church and an architectural concept home in Ipswich called The Bubble House.
“Supernova was the first video we shot with (Tantalon), and it was such a huge success that he really trusted us with free agency,” Mr Long said.
“He basically gave us the track and said ‘do your magic’ and it ended up being our most ambitious project.”
Inspired by old fashioned sci-fi films, the Jetsons and Japanese product adverts, Mr Long said the eight minute clip had a retro futuristic sound and perfectly captured the mood of the song.
The quirky concept follows a man who is bored with his life so he seeks out a cult which is secretly working with an energy drink company to extract “brain juice” from its victims.
With a modest budget of just $3000, Mr Long said they went above and beyond for the project which took a few months to complete.
Despite initial concerns their hours of work would look like a disaster on screen, the project has received positive feedback and was even featured on ABC’s RAGE.
