NRL legend thanks Roma for his success

- Chloe Cufflin

Legendary rugby league icon Darren Lockyer has thanked his hometown Roma for all the support he received growing up, and said he hoped more Roma players would pull on the Maroons jersey in the years to come.

Ahead of Game 1 of the 2023 State of Origin series, Lockyer has partnered with XXXX for a postcode promotion, with the current Queensland side to wear their respective hometown postcodes on their jerseys.

“Wearing your postcode recognises the efforts of the community, your coaches, the club manager, the local butcher who sponsored the barbecue,” he said.

“All these people play a role but are rarely acknowledged.

“I wish I’d been able to wear my postcode on my jersey throughout my career, but I’m proud to be rallying behind my Roma hometown off the field this Origin.

“Roma will always have a special place in my heart, and when I think back I have such fond memories of playing league in the community and all through school.

“I have my Roma community to thank for all the support I received from day one in my professional rugby league career.

“I’m proud of my origins that gave me a passion for league from a young age, and I’m honoured to represent Roma.

“As a nod to the great support my community gave me throughout my career, and I hope to see plenty of Roma representation in many years to come.”

Lockyer said what made Queensland rugby league players so talented was their passion.

“One of the reasons Queensland and the Maroons team is so special is because we have so many incredible players who come from all over the state,” he said.

“(Queenslanders) bring an extra level of passion that can be traced back to their hometown and the support they no doubt received from their community that they take with them well into their professional career.

“Regional upbringing and hometown community support has always been a hallmark of the team, and over the years, the Maroons have been made up of players from all different parts of Queensland.”

Footy fans across the Sunshine State can represent their own hometowns from behind the TV with XXXX offering limited edition personalised merchandise.
