If the new tennis flick Challengers has you rushing the net for more courtside action, here’s where you can swiftly stream yourself to a straight-sets victory ....
WIMBLEDON Binge, Foxtel, Paramount+ ★★★☆☆
Kirsten Dunst heads up this fun tennis rom-com as Lizzie Bradbury, a brash American champ who serves her affections upon Colt (Paul Bettany), a jaded British racqueteer whose lowly ranked career is almost over. Discovering that good foreplay leads to a great forehand, Colt rapidly improves to make a longshot run at the Wimbledon title, with the expectations of a nation resting on his tired shoulders.
BORG VS. McENROE Rent only ★★★★☆
Was the 1980 Wimbledon Men’s Final between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe the greatest game of tennis ever played? This engrossing dramatisation of that tumultuous fivesetter says the answer is yes. Borg (played by Sverrir Gudnason) was the epitome of the Scandinavian iceman. And there will never be another hothead as instantly inflammable as McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf, a fine physical and emotional match for the role).
BATTLE OF THE SEXES Disney+ or rent ★★★★☆
In 1973, the best female player in the world, Billie Jean King (Emma Stone), took on a retired male pro almost twice her age. Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was a notorious hustler who dreamed up the exhibition match to prove the inferiority of women’s tennis. This engrossing drama wisely centres on the unnecessary pressures placed on King, who at the time of the big game was engulfed by multiple professional and personal crises.
