10 things to do in the city on Mother’s Day

A celebratio­n of the region’s mums is back again in 2024 and Toowoomba has plenty of special Mother’s Day events planned for this weekend.

Aside from treats for mum, there are also a range of activities planned right across the city.

Here are 10 things happening over Saturday and Sunday

MOTHER’S DAY AT DRAYTON CEMETERY

The Toowoomba Regional Council is hosting a special gathering for families at Drayton Cemetery to honour the memories of mothers who have passed away.

Join the cemetery team cup of tea or coffee and a chat at the cemetery’s sitting area between 9 – 11am on Sunday May 12.

Flowers can be bought on the day or pre-ordered by calling our team on 4688 6686, and pink vases are available on Sunday.

FAIRHOLME ART EXHIBITION

Now celebratin­g its eighth year, the Fairholme Open Art Prize features a curated presentati­on that “invites a shared conversati­on, artistic expression, and audience engagement”.

The exhibition at the school’s assembly hall gives artists both local and abroad the chance to showcase their works and win a share in $15,000 worth of prizes.

The free event is open to the public across Saturday and Sunday from 10am each day.

COOL NIGHTS IN PITTSWORTH

Famous Queensland ensemble Cool Nights Big Band will take the stage this weekend as part of a fundraiser for the Pittsworth State School and Pittsworth State High School P and C Associatio­ns.

The group will be performing a mix of rock and jazz tunes, with high school students also accompanyi­ng them on stage at the new PSHS hall.

EXHIBITION AT REP THEATRE

An art exhibition featuring landscape paintings by Catherine Ketton and Sabine Kehoe is taking place on 94 Margaret Street at the Toowoomba Repertory Theatre between the Park House Cafe and Cafe Valetta.

The gallery will be open from 10am – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

MOTHER’S DAY MAKERS MARKET

Find the perfect gift for the mums in your life at Sunday’s special Makers Market at the Rail Goods Shed on Victoria Street in the CBD from 8am.

The markets include over 80 of the region’s best makers, food trucks, live music and face painting for the kids.

RALLY FOR PALESTINE

The latest rally to call for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine has been planned for Queens Park on Saturday from 9.30am.

The event will commemorat­e the Nakba of May 1948, which saw 750,000 Palestinia­ns forced to flee their lands. It has been organised Justice for Palestine Toowoomba, Labor Friends of Palestine and Amnesty Internatio­nal Toowoomba, which have united in an urgent call for an immediate ceasefire and access to emergency aid.

FREE STARGAZING EVENT

Organiser Ournightsk­y Astronomy is holding its latest monthly stargazing event on Saturday from 6pm at UniSQ near the front entrance off West Street.

Come along and have a look through one of the telescopes that will be pointed into the night sky.

This will be the last month this year to see the Orion Nebula, with other targets including, open and globular star clusters, binary star systems, dead star remnants, galaxies and more.

This event is open to everyone, but limit the use of torches/lights as you head towards the telescopes.

PETSTOCK BARBECUE FUNDRAISER

Petstock Anzac Avenue in Harristown is holding its monthly fundraiser and adoption day on Saturday morning.

Meet the team, grab some food and drink and have a chat about either fostering or adopting a pet.

The fun kicks off at 10am.

FARMERS MARKETS

Treat mum to a morning of delicious treats, fresh produce and live music at the Toowoomba Farmers Market on Saturday from 7am.

More than 100 farmers, makers, bakers, growers, distillers, artisans, crafters, curators and entertaine­rs are at the corner of Campbell and Lindsay Streets in East Toowoomba each week with their quality wares.

MOTHER’S DAY AT COBB AND CO

Celebrate mum or a loved one this Mother’s Day from 8.30am at the museum and indulge in a delicious buffet breakfast.

Collective Weave will also be there to craft a charming pom pom key chain for $5 or create a note for someone special and add it to the living artwork.
