Flexible study drives Thomas to graduation
THOMAS Redmond’s university experience was spent studying agricultural engineering between cattle drives in Queensland’s Maranoa region.
“I did once try doing an assignment while on horseback… didn’t quite work for a computer programming class,” he laughed.
After eight years of parttime external study, Mr Redmond will graduate from the University of Southern Queensland at the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre today.
Two ceremonies will celebrate the hard work and achievements of more than 400 Faculty of Health, Engineering and Sciences graduands.
Mr Redmond is based in Roma and runs a primary production business with his partner, which he has run while working towards his higher education goals.
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) student transferred to the agricultural engineering specialisation after his first year of study and hasn’t looked back.
“I sort of fell in love with agriculture and transferred because I saw a potential gap in the market there. My logic is everyone needs to eat three times a day, so if we can improve agriculture productivity through engineering, it’s going to benefit Australia,” Mr Redmond said.
