Champion stands tall
Commonwealth Games silver medallist and 2017 Australian pairs champion Barrie Lester overcame strong opposition to again win Cobram Bowling Club’s classic triples event played on Wednesday and Thursday last week.
Included in Lester’s winning side was 2017 Victorian pairs champion member Curtis Hanley and Moama bowler Mark Chaplin.
Hanley, who is a member of the Australian junior squad, began bowling as a youngster at Tocumwal, lives in Katamatite and works in Cobram. He and his brother currently play pennant for Melbourne Bowling Club.
A full field of 120 bowlers took part in the competition, which attracted players from all over Victoria as well as the Riverina.
Only two sides won their six games, with the team of Anthony Witkowski, Ed Witkowski (Heathmont) and Warren Blanche (Finley RS) the runnerup, only four points short of Lester’s winning score.
