Cham­pion stands tall

Com­mon­wealth Games sil­ver medal­list and 2017 Aus­tralian pairs cham­pion Barrie Lester over­came strong op­po­si­tion to again win Co­bram Bowl­ing Club’s clas­sic triples event played on Wed­nes­day and Thurs­day last week.

In­cluded in Lester’s win­ning side was 2017 Vic­to­rian pairs cham­pion mem­ber Cur­tis Han­ley and Moama bowler Mark Chap­lin.

Han­ley, who is a mem­ber of the Aus­tralian ju­nior squad, be­gan bowl­ing as a young­ster at Tocumwal, lives in Kata­matite and works in Co­bram. He and his brother cur­rently play pen­nant for Melbourne Bowl­ing Club.

A full field of 120 bowlers took part in the com­pe­ti­tion, which at­tracted play­ers from all over Vic­to­ria as well as the Rive­rina.

Only two sides won their six games, with the team of An­thony Witkowski, Ed Witkowski (Heath­mont) and War­ren Blanche (Fin­ley RS) the run­nerup, only four points short of Lester’s win­ning score.

The re­main­ing po­si­tions were filled as fol­low­ing:

Third place: Kevin Bren­nan, Barry Bren­nan, Brad Camp­bell (Moama) 5.5 wins, 114 points.

Fourth: Doug Cor­ri­gan (Ring­wood), Paul and Matthew Mur­phy (Yar­rav­ille-Footscray) 5 (112)

Fifth: Den­nis Rawl­ings, John Cow­per, Ron Brown (Wagga Aussie Rules) 5 (103)

Sixth: Greg Tay­lor, J. Fryer, M. Brun­dell (Rom­sey) 5 (99)

Sev­enth: Barry Close, Michael Allen, Peter Aldridge (Queen­scliff) 5 (98)

Eighth: Tom McIsaac, Gary 5 96
