Lions are always ready to lend a hand

The Cobram Courier - - NEWS - By Patrick Tansey

If you are interested in getting to the heart of your community, the Cobram Lions Club might just provide you with the perfect platform to do so.

The club has recently committed to supporting the ‘No Flies On Us’ program for the next three years at a local level after being approached by the Victorian Agriculture Department.

Lions’ members helped prepare more than 250 showbags and fly traps for the school children who attended the No Flies On Us Expo at Cobram Civic Centre on August 27.

The club is keen to educate youth about the hazards that Queensland fruit fly brings to the horticulture industry.

‘‘We’ve engaged five schools as part of this program and we will be doing in-school programs in these local schools between now and December,’’ Cobram Lions Club secretary Cheryl Hill said.

Mrs Hill said the club’s objective was to engage with the local community and give something back.

‘‘As Lions, we are committed to the community of Cobram and we donate our fundraising locally,’’ she said.

‘‘For example, we donate scholarships to local schools, we donate to people in need — not only monetary, but also by physically helping people.’’

One of the club’s biggest fundraising generators is its Log Cabin Market, held on the last Saturday of every month at Federation Park in Cobram.

There is a huge variety of stalls offering local produce and crafts, tools, plants, clothing, household goods, pet supplies, jewellery, soaps, candles and much more.

Mrs Hill moved to the area 12 months ago with husband Ron and they wanted to find a way to immerse themselves in the community as quickly as possible.

‘‘We wanted to get involved in the local community in terms of helping the public out. We’ve always done something like that, so we decided to join Lions because they were involved with the community so much,’’ she said.

Mrs Hill said the Cobram club was looking for new members and encouraging people to come and find out what they’re all about.

‘‘We’re looking for new people because we’re all getting a bit older. We need to get around a bit more and spread the workload around,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s very beneficial. You can do a lot of things for the community.

‘‘We’re always doing something and we’ve made some lovely friends that we’ve found through Lions since we moved here.’’

Wanting new members: Cobram Lions members John McPherson (president), Cheryl Hill (secretary), and long-serving member John Artavilla at Federation Park where Lions hold a market every month.
