Walk raises awareness
Almost 40 walkers took part in the Soroptimist Cobram-Barooga state-tostate walk on Sunday, with organisers estimating more than $400 being raised to fight violence against women.
Despite an early start, organisers were thankful the weather remained clear.
Soroptimist CobramBarooga publicity officer Jan Cullen said people came from across town to walk from Thompsons Beach to the Barooga Community Centre and enjoy a barbecue breakfast.
‘‘We’ve been organising events to raise money for White Ribbon and Shepparton’s Marian Community for about three or four years — as far as I can remember,’’ she said.
In past years, the group has held dinners or community events, with this year being the first for the state-to-state walk.
Ms Cullen said the Cobram-Barooga Soroptimist group hoped the event would grow in coming years and see more men take part.
‘‘I think we only had about two men participate in the walk,’’ she said.
‘‘But we’re pleased by the support we’ve received and we’re hoping it will build up to a terrific event.’’
