Club reels in plenty of new members in first year
Cobram Barooga Anglers rounded off its first year as a club in style on the weekend, with 80 people casting hooks to officially kick off Murray cod season.
It was a massive weekend for the club, with its final competition starting at 6 am Saturday, running through to Sunday lunch.
The biggest catch of the weekend was by Stephen Lenssen, who managed to haul in a beastlylooking 92 cm cod.
Sam Jenkins and Callum Hulley won the Cobram Barooga Anglers’ senior and junior champion of the year respectively for their efforts with the rod.
Committee chair Stefan Bruni explained how the titles were judged.
‘‘The winner is the person that competes in all six competitions we put on and every fish they catch, that’s legal, we measure and the length of the fish determines the points they get for the catch (i.e. 58 cm equals 58 points).”
It has been a massive 12 months for the club, which formed at the start of the year, and Bruni could not be prouder of the fact it has got people out fishing again and doing it with a greater sense of identity and comrade.
‘‘It’s been a fantastic year really,’’ he said.
‘‘We’ve got 160 members as of now. We might lose a few next year when it comes to renewal, but so far it’s been really positive.
‘‘There’s more and more people out fishing and more people actually talking about Cobram as a fishing destination as well as a camping place.
‘‘Everything we set out to do in our first year we’ve sort of well and truly exceeded.
‘‘next year we will plan a few trips away and things like that to make it even more exciting.’’
Bruni never imagined the club would attract so many members considering it is only just starting out, but believed in many ways, the numbers reflected the environment in Cobram-Barooga.
‘‘It’s pretty phenomenal, there’s been clubs that have been going for 20 years that have 50 members, so I think the fact we live right on the water, people love to get into that, but also, we’ve got a pretty varied age demographic on our committee so every age group is catered for socially,’’ he said.
