Essential theatre, just As You Like It
Drum roll please ... Essential Theatre is back with its 20th anniversary season of Shakespeare in the Vines. What better way to celebrate this enormous milestone than with a brand-new production, proudly presented by Moira Arts and Culture Inc.
This year’s event will be held at the usual picturesque location of Byramine Homestead, Burramine on Sunday, February 20 with gates open at 5pm, performance at 6.30pm.
As You Like It brings all of Shakespeare’s best ideas together in one masterful play of love, betrayal, mischief and foolery, and features some of the most iconic and memorable Shakespearean lines ever spoken. “All the world’s a stage.”
Rosalind has had a big day. She’s seen her first wrestling match, fallen in love with the winner — who is then banished from court — and then her jealous uncle, Duke Frederick, banishes her from court too!
Disguised as a boy, she sets forth into exile with her best friend Celia to find her father, the former Duke, and her new love, Orlando, in the wild and wondrous Forest
Along the way, they meet a motley crew of characters and use the freedom of disguise to test the strength of “love at first sight”.
Led by experienced theatre makers Amanda LaBonte and Sophie Lampel, Essential Theatre re-interprets classic texts for modern audiences, delivering vibrant and engaging productions.
They strip back any preconceived ideas as to how Shakespeare “should” be presented and create productions accessible and enjoyable for all.
Experience has taught them how to juggle inclement and unpredictable weather, noisy cockatoos, stray dogs and most importantly how to celebrate the brilliant words of William Shakespeare.
“A fabulous performance. Watching the sun set and sipping wine — it was the perfect summer's evening, thank you.”
This outdoor theatre event is guaranteed to delight.
