The Cobram Courier

Course shines on a big stage

- By Tyler Maher

The attention of the national golfing conversation turned towards Cobram Barooga Golf Club at the weekend.

Hannah Green made history in the TPS Murray River tournament, and by doing so she catapulted the twin towns into the front of minds across the country.

With coverage on Kayo and Fox Sports across the weekend as well, the entire world was able to see how immaculate the local club’s course looked, and how well supported the event was by those in the region.

“There were lots of people in town, we saw people wearing polo shirts from Wagga, Sydney, Bendigo and Warrnambool — they came from everywhere,” Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism committee member Tony Tranter said.

“The quality of the field and players were genuinely attractive for golfers to come from all around to see the action.”

Importantly, it meant businesses across the towns were full all week.

“The accommodation places were full all week, it was great for the cafes and restaurants and all of the other tourism services as well,” Mr Tranter said.

“We see events as playing a big role in our recovery from COVID, and it’s fantastic that we have been able to help in that off the back of the beach volleyball and masters cricket events recently as well.

“That’s about seven weeks of premier events which have been a real shot in the arm for the community.”

And the country’s best golfers will be visiting the region for plenty of years to come.

“We’d hope to see this event

here for the next 10 years, but we do have an agreement for at least the next three,” Mr Tranter said.

“The Murray River is one of the most visited golfing tourism places in the country, and we’d love to keep the light shining on the Murray River and especially Cobram-Barooga every year.

“We’ve had amazing feedback not only from the thousands who were in town but the hopefully hundreds of thousands who were watching the event on TV as well about how great it all looked.”
