Shire cases continue to rise

- By Isabelle Harris

Moira Shire has recorded 33 new COVID-19 cases, bringing total cases in the area to 190 as of midday on March 15.

Statewide, Victoria has recorded 7460 new cases; 5972 from rapid antigen tests and 1488 from PCR tests.

There are currently 197 cases in hospital and 12 in intensive care, while sadly another four lives have been lost in the latest 24 hour period.

It comes as a new COVID-19 Omicron sub-variant called BA.2 is tipped to become dominant in Australia.

It is thought to be up to seven times more transmissible than the original COVID-19 virus first seen in Wuhan.

However, Australia’s pandemic prognosis is more positive than in January and preliminary data from Denmark suggests people previously infected with the original Omicron variant are unlikely to be re-infected with the new sub-variant.

It is not yet known where the variant originated from, but it has been seen in the United States, the UK and Australia.
