Roar take it up to top two
It was another big week of action for the Cobram Roar, with two important games being played.
On Wednesday, April 20, the Roar took on the league leading Boomers in the Albury Wodonga Football Association Cup, with the men in yellow and black picking up an impressive 4-0 win.
Described by coach Vince Iannucci as “by far and away the best performance we’ve put on this year” the midweek win was certainly a confidence booster for the side.
“I can’t pick a bad player from that night,” Iannucci said.
Four different players found the back of the net in the big win, with Florian Dambricourt, Anthony Corso, Bill Puckett and Jack Smith all scoring.
On Sunday it was a disappointing result for Cobram in the division one men’s competition, with the Roar battling out a 1-1 draw against a physical Albury United.
United scored early in the contest and a 44th-minute Florian Dambicourt penalty was the only time the Roar could get on the scoreboard.
Iannucci said United caught the Roar off guard with their physicality.
“They came out hard, like really hard, and it probably flustered the boys a little bit,” Iannucci said.
“We kept their opportunities for out and out goals to a minimum, which overall I thought was good.”
Albury went down to ten men
early in the game, with player, Melkie Woldemichael, picking up an 18th-minute red card after an altercation with Cobram’s Ben Zito.
“They wern’t going to open up after that, they basically parked the bus and said ‘you get around this wall we’re going to put in front of you’ and we just didn’t have the smarts to do it, it was as simple as that,” Ianucci said.
“We just tried the same thing over and over again and it wasn’t working.”
Jack Dovey and Spiros Vourgaslis missed out Sunday’s game, with the duo set to make a difference when they return.

Division 2 men Cobram Roar 3 drew with Albury United 3
The reserves squad had a tough game ahead of them playing a strong team away. Cobram got a quick goal in the first five minutes by Luke
Goodin to set the intensity from the start. It wasn't until United scored from a cross followed by a quick shot inside the box for Cobram to be 2-1 down at half-time. United came out strong after half-time and scored a quick goal. Putting the score 3-1. It wasn't until 20 minutes to go, the two super subs came on, pressure from Joshua Goldsworthy on the keeper, in tight from a corner, the ball skimmed off the defenders to score an own goal after Goldsworthy chested it in to bring the intensity back to the game. The other super sub Nathan Thomas got on the end of a cross to put the ball in the back of the net to level the scores. Special mentions to Andre Fazio Castle who after a head clash, which required 6 stitches after the game, applied amazing pressure to keep the boys in line and also Jordan Kelly who made some amazing saves to keep the game a draw.
Division 2 women Cobram Roar 4 def Albury United 0
The women’s team took on an improving opposition in Albury United. They started a bit slow but it wasn't long before Laydah Samani found the back of the net giving the women an early lead. Not long after the ladies earnt a penalty and Marlie Noonan scored but unfortunately the match official had other ideas on the way the penalty was taken and the goal was disallowed, with Noonan given a yellow card. This dropped the morale a little — but they fought on only to find the back of the net again through Samani for her 2nd goal. It wasn't long until she got herself a third, with a great cross by Lara Hyde finding the head of Samani for a hattrick.
The second half saw the team experience a crushing blow with vice-captain Lara Hyde coming off with a suspected knee injury which saw her rushed off to the hospital. The ladies regrouped and finished the half with another goal through Samani.
Under-16 Cobram Roar 13 def Albury United 0
The boys made the early trip to Albury for an 8.30 game and dominated from the word go. The passing was a highlight with most goals coming from well worked passages of play. The end result was a well deserved 13-0 win.

The under-14 team displayed talent and determination in their match against Albury United. The defence stayed strong throughout the match with Reuben Haley leading the way.

Under-14 girls Cobram Roar 11 def Wodonga Diamonds 0
The under-14 girls are on a different draw — they played Wodonga Diamonds at Albury United’s grounds.
Roar came out with a strong offensive line which saw them lead at half time 5-0. Diamonds changed tactics in the second half however Roar’s solid defensive strategy kept the Diamonds at bay with Roar scoring a further six goals.

Under-13 Cobram Roar 1 lost to Albury United 9 Under 12 Cobram Roar 0 lost to Albury United 1
The under-12s boys went on to face Albury United at Jelbart Park, looking good and well rested from the Easter break.
The boys start off well with great defending from Andre Corso, Will Young, Blaize Dahlenburg and Cameron Brew, keeping the opposition forwards goalless.
Albury United scored the first goal of the game towards the end of the first half but the Cobram roar under12s kept their heads up fighting for the match until the whistle blew for the end of the first half.
The second half started with danger forwards Jeremy Egan, Logan Morley and Harvey Boak pushing for a goal to get the scores level. Goalkeeper Charlie Keath made some great saves to keep us in the match.
Final whistle blew being a 0-1 loss to Cobram Roar but the boys showed great fight and determination.
