HAIR­DRESSER

A hair­dress­ing ap­pren­tice­ship typ­i­cally takes three to four years of prac­ti­cal train­ing and is the stan­dard qual­i­fi­ca­tion re­quired to be­gin a ca­reer. Em­ploy­ment De­part­ment data re­veals a cer­tifi­cate III or IV is the high­est level of ed­u­ca­tion for 74 per cent of hair­dressers. A fur­ther 11 per cent hold a diploma or ad­vanced diploma. Typ­i­cally, qual­i­fi­ca­tions be­yond the cer­tifi­cate are more fo­cused on the busi­ness side of the ca­reer and tar­get hair­dressers look­ing to open their own sa­lon and man­age other staff. Al­most nine in 10 hair­dressers are fe­male, and they are typ­i­cally younger than the av­er­age worker with al­most a third aged 15 to 25. The av­er­age full-time hair­dresser works 37.7 hours and earns $800 a week.

LAND­SCAPE GAR­DENER

Work­ers in this role may be re­spon­si­ble for plan­ning and de­sign­ing land­scapes, plant­ing and main­tain­ing gar­dens, and build­ing and in­stalling struc­tures such as re­tain­ing walls and wa­ter fea­tures. Land­scape gar­den­ers typ­i­cally work full time (74 per cent) and hold a vo­ca­tional qual­i­fi­ca­tion (47.9 per cent). An­other 6.8 per cent have been to univer­sity. A com­mon qual­i­fi­ca­tion is a Cer­tifi­cate III in Land­scape Con­struc­tion ap­pren­tice­ship, which typ­i­cally takes about three years and com­prises both the­o­ret­i­cal and prac­ti­cal learn­ing. This is a male-dom­i­nated oc­cu­pa­tion (90 per cent) and the av­er­age full-time pay is $951 a week. The most im­por­tant skills for land­scape gar­den­ers – apart from a green thumb – are the abil­ity to con­trol equip­ment and sys­tems, talk to oth­ers, think crit­i­cally and lis­ten ac­tively.

IN­TE­RIOR DE­SIGNER

The role of an in­te­rior de­signer is to an­a­lyse a space, plan a de­sign and rec­om­mend ma­te­ri­als, fur­ni­ture and prod­ucts to fit a func­tional and aes­thetic brief. Peo­ple in­ter­ested in this line of work should be able to think cre­atively, vi­su­alise, com­pre­hend re­quests and man­age ad­min­is­tra­tive tasks. The av­er­age full-time in­te­rior de­signer is 42 years old, works 41.6 hours a week and earns $1019 a week. Most hold a de­gree such as a Bach­e­lor of De­sign (In­te­rior De­sign) but vo­ca­tional qual­i­fi­ca­tions, such as a Diploma of In­te­rior De­sign and Dec­o­ra­tion, are also avail­able.
