Tap into top advice on offer
IF BUILDING or renovating are on your ‘to do’ list in 2015, the best place to start is with the Master Builders’ A Consumer Guide to Building workshop, says Master Builders deputy executive director Paul Bidwell.
“A lot of people start to think about an upcoming renovation or building project over the Christmas break – it’s a really popular time and that bit of Christmas cheer and the commitment to some bold New Year’s resolutions can really drive people to get in and start projects they’ve only been dreaming about until now,” he said.
“The most common cause of stress, disputes and miscommunication in building is a lack of information about the building process – so our workshops are designed to arm consumers with the knowledge they need to better navigate the process.”
Mr Bidwell said the session only took four hours, but covered a range of issues during this time. These included choosing land, building your dream home, finding a Master Builder, contracts and variations, deposits/progress payments, building approvals and inspections, construction phase and what to do before you moved in – all issues where there were a lot of misconceptions the organisation tried to dispel among participants.
“With a comprehensive section on improving communication with your builder, Master Builders’ aim is to ensure homeowners know what to expect through the various stages of building and renovating,” Mr Bidwell said. “Ultimately, we want to assist in reducing stress and paving the way to a smoother build so that everyone is happy.”
Master Builders has other advice for anyone looking to build or renovate.
“Do your research,” Mr Bidwell said. “If you live in southeast Queensland, visit a display village where you can see the latest housing designs, trends and products on offer.
“If you’re not in the proximity of a display village, make sure you build with a Master Builder for peace of mind that your builder or trade contractor is appropriately licensed and has the support of Master Builders.”
A Consumer Guide to Building workshop sessions cost $25, with 2015 dates scheduled in Brisbane (January 24), Mackay (February 7), Cairns (February 10), the Sunshine Coast (February 14), Gold Coast (February 21), and Townsville (February 28).
