A decade on, and this couple’s love affair with retirement living hasn’t waned.

Ron and Margaret Gibbs have been enjoying resort-style living for the last 10 years with no regrets.

They were the first people to move into Ruby by Living Gems Residential Resort in Eagleby, and said they were enjoying living there now just as much as they did when they took possession of their first home in the resort.

“About three years ago we decided we wanted a change, so we sold our original home at Ruby and bought another one,” Mr Gibbs said.

He said the new home appealed to his wife’s gardening obsession, and the threebedroom, two-bathroom design with some personal touches suited their needs.

The couple emigrated from England 44 years ago. Mr Gibbs is a Londoner and Mrs Gibbs hails from Portsmouth.

Mr Gibbs said it was a family affair, with both of his older brothers also making the move from Britain to the Gold Coast.

“We liked the sound of it so we followed the family and settled on the Gold Coast, where we raised our children,” he said.

“When the children grew up we eventually decided to downsize and moved to a boutique retirement village on the northern Gold Coast.”

Mr Gibbs said the desire for a garden eventually had them move from the village into a townhouse in Runaway Bay.

“On our 40th wedding anniversary, I asked Margaret if she could see us living in a townhouse for the foreseeable future and she said no. So we started looking at other options,” he said. “We had friends living at Sapphire by Living Gems – we liked the look of it and planned to buy until we discovered Ruby was being built across the road and decided to buy there.

“We love the location and the lifestyle. We are near our children and my brothers, who all live on the Gold Coast.”

Mr Gibbs said the social aspect of living in the retirement community was something he really loved.

“We really enjoy our social life, it’s a big change for me; until we moved here I never had a social life,” he said.

“We now enjoy the benefits of living in a lifestyle resort with great friends and neighbours plus all the resort facilities under the sun.”

Living Gems has eight residential resorts in South East Queensland.

New homes are available at Living Gems Pacific Paradise on the Sunshine Coast, Living Gems Toowoomba, Living Gems Caboolture on the northside of Brisbane, and Opal by Living Gems in Logan Village.

Established properties are very occasionally offered for sale at Ruby by Living Gems and Sapphire by Living Gems Eagleby, Living Gems Maleny, and Living Gems Gold Coast.

Celebrating 10 years of resort-style living at Ruby by Living Gems Residential Resort in Eagleby are Ron and Margaret Gibbs.
