The good oil on premium unleaded

GOOD news for Volkswagen and Skoda buyers with both brands this week lowering their minimum requirements for petrol.

They say most of their current, or in VW’s case its 2010, models can now run happily on premium unleaded (95RON) fuel. Until now the imported vehicles demanded the dearer 98RON petrol.

Skoda Australia boss Matthew Wiesner says after a review of the standard of Australian petrol the company is satisfied premium fuel is now acceptable for its engines.

‘‘We had erred on the side of caution demanding 98 octane but we are now confident our engines can run on the lower octane without any loss of performance.’’

All Skoda models – the latest Octavia, Octavia RS, Scout, Roomster and Superb – can run on the cheaper fuel. The 2010 VW Golf, Jetta, Beetle, Passat, Tiguan and Touareg are also compliant. The high performance models Golf GTi and Golf R32, the Passat R36 and V6 Passat CC still require 98RON petrol.
