JAMES Dean died on September 30, 1955, near Cholame, California. Dean and his mechanic were driving a race-prepared Porsche 550 Spyder to a sports car race at Salinas to get familiar with the vehicle. He had earlier that day been issued with a speeding ticket for driving 65mph (105km/h) in a 55mph zone. Two hours later, Dean swerved to avoid a car driven by 23-year-old student Donald Turnupseed who had turned in front of the Porsche. The cars collided and the mechanic was thrown from the Porsche and injured. Dean was taken to Paso Robles War Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
