Road trips find favour

The Courier-Mail - Motoring - - TWO WHEELS -

LATEST research into favourite holiday options suggests a caravan or motorhome trip is becoming more popular than ever.

A survey by caravan and motorhome maker Jayco has found eight out of 10 Australians say a caravan holiday is a good option for families.

The results also showed most adults believed it would provide more opportunities for quality family time together – almost three-quarters also believed it provided good opportunities to show their children the Australian countryside.

Jayco marketing director Andrew Ryan says RV holidays are a perfect option for parents who want to have a memorable and interactive holiday with their children.

‘‘There is nothing quite like heading out on the open road with the kids,’’ he says.

‘‘The songs, the driving games and all the random pit-stops simply cannot be replicated when you travel by air.

‘‘Unlike any other form of travel, RVs give families the flexibility to stay in multiple destinations without ever having to unpack,’’ Ryan says.

Overseas holidays were less attractive to more than half of the survey’s respondents – 63 per cent would consider caravanning around Australia in preference to heading overseas, with the majority of those people believing a caravan holiday would allow them to have a longer break for less.

The survey (an online survey among 1005 Australians) also quizzed respondents on emerging purchasing patterns – 56 per cent say they would consider buying a caravan over a holiday home, while 64 per cent say they would consider it over hotel accommodation.

Jayco, a caravan manufacturer for more than three decades, holds 46 per cent of the RV market, says caravan and motorhome sales are continuing to grow.

‘‘Families are starting to realise that going on a caravan holiday doesn’t mean sacrificing any of their creature comforts,’’ he says.

Ryan says RV holidays were becoming a more cost-effective option for people wanting to get out and see more of the country and its attractions.

‘‘Purchasing an RV allows you the freedom to get out and go where you want, when you want, compared to a traditional hotel holiday.

‘‘The maintenance costs compared to owning a holiday house is also substantially less, making owning an RV a more achievable dream for many Australians,’’ he says.
