THE Mon­deo may go down in his­tory as hav­ing killed the iconic Fal­con but it was never meant to be that way.

It was sup­posed to top­ple the Toy­ota Camry but, in the end, Ford’s global sedan for fam­ily and fleet cus­tomers claimed one of its own.

In 1991, Ja­panese up­start Toy­ota gained mar­ket lead­er­ship in Australia for the first time, a po­si­tion it held for four years.

Ford, leader for the pre­vi­ous nine years, wanted to put a dent in Toy­ota’s top-sell­ing sedan as it was mak­ing in­roads into the Fal­con’s dom­i­nance.

And so in 1995 it im­ported the Mon­deo, the new medi­um­sized sedan de­signed to suit all tastes in all mar­kets.

The Mon­deo sold well in Europe and the US but Aus­tralians didn’t take to it. It was dropped from the lo­cal line-up af­ter just five years.

By 2007, though, Ford could see the Fal­con’s glory days were over. The shift to small cars, SUVs and utes was in full swing and Ford rein­tro­duced the Mon­deo to com­bat the Camry. Now it’s ready to do it all again.
