4WD models have a “crawl” function in low range and the engine has a slightly higher idle so farmers can walk alongside the HiLux as it drives itself, for example when feeding stock.

The HiLux can change gears like a sporty Chev Corvette. Six-speed manual versions employ technology that matches revs between gear-changes, to make even the most hamfisted driver shift like an ace.

A mining industry special pack comes ready-to-roll from showrooms with a hi-vis flag, reflective stickers, heavy duty bullbar and isolator switch.

The beefed-up front suspension won’t sag under the weight of a bullbar. More than one-third of all HiLuxes sold in Australia have bullbars fitted.

Two of Toyota’s bullbars have a James Bond-style numberplate cover that flips up to run out the winch cable.
