QUICK GLANCE

Fit and finish are excellent. There are climate-control aircon, cloth and leather seat trim and auto lights and wipers. The package is appealing but overall feels dated. Satnav is standard but latest safety tech is missing. Warranty is just three years/100,000km. Servicing is $1765 for three years/45,000km. It has supportive sports-style seats and ample space — rear has plenty of room for adults — though the cloth/leather combo brings down the tone. The cabin is reasonably quiet but some tyre noise intrudes. Boot is roomy (with full-size spare). Cupholders won’t fit anything larger than a small espresso. Five stars with a score of 35.1/37 from ANCAP, which found a slight risk of serious chest injury for the driver, as well as lower leg injury for driver and front passenger. Reverse camera and rear sensors are standard but the Active misses out on the more advanced driver aids in dearer versions. Camera image quality is poor at night. The four-cylinder turbo won’t set the world on fire but, teamed with a six-speed auto fitted with paddle-shifters, it does a reasonable job. The transmission’s gated style centre shift is fiddly and annoying. Sport mode sharpens performance, holding on to gears. Tyres can lose grip under hard initial acceleration, especially in the wet. Claimed thirst is 5.6L/100km and on 700km test it returned 6.8L. With 72L tank, it’s a long way between drinks. Looks smart, is better equipped and its 2.0-litre turbo packs more punch (177kW/345Nm). It has six-speed auto, satnav, heated seats, auto stop-start, auto high-beam, adaptive cruise control and auto braking up to 40km/h. Thirst 8.5L/ 100km. Warranty is three years/ 100,000km. Servicing costs $1065 for three years/45,000km. Not as powerful but still quicker — 0-100km/h takes 8.2 secs. The 1.4 turbo (110kW/250Nm) PEUGEOT 508 1.6 ACTIVE PRICE $36,990 SAFETY 6 airbags, 5 stars ENGINE 1.6-litre 4-cyl turbo, 121kW/240Nm TRANSMISSION 6-speed auto; FWD THIRST 5.6L/100km is paired with a seven-speed twin-clutch auto. It has satnav, adaptive cruise control and auto city braking. Thirst is 5.3L/100km. Warranty is three years/45,000km. Servicing costs $1092 for three years/45,000km. The 508 is stylish and super economical. It will appeal to those looking for something a little different from the usual Japanese fare.
