It has sup­port­ive sports-style seats and am­ple space — rear has plenty of room for adults — though the cloth/leather combo brings down the tone. The cabin is rea­son­ably quiet but some tyre noise in­trudes. Boot is roomy (with full-size spare). Cuphold­ers won’t fit any­thing larger than a small espresso. Five stars with a score of 35.1/37 from ANCAP, which found a slight risk of se­ri­ous chest in­jury for the driver, as well as lower leg in­jury for driver and front pas­sen­ger. Re­verse cam­era and rear sen­sors are stan­dard but the Active misses out on the more ad­vanced driver aids in dearer ver­sions. Cam­era im­age qual­ity is poor at night. The four-cylin­der turbo won’t set the world on fire but, teamed with a six-speed auto fit­ted with pad­dle-shifters, it does a rea­son­able job. The trans­mis­sion’s gated style cen­tre shift is fid­dly and an­noy­ing. Sport mode sharp­ens per­for­mance, hold­ing on to gears. Tyres can lose grip un­der hard ini­tial ac­cel­er­a­tion, es­pe­cially in the wet. Claimed thirst is 5.6L/100km and on 700km test it re­turned 6.8L. With 72L tank, it’s a long way be­tween drinks. Looks smart, is bet­ter equipped and its 2.0-litre turbo packs more punch (177kW/345Nm). It has six-speed auto, sat­nav, heated seats, auto stop-start, auto high-beam, adap­tive cruise con­trol and auto brak­ing up to 40km/h. Thirst 8.5L/ 100km. War­ranty is three years/ 100,000km. Ser­vic­ing costs $1065 for three years/45,000km. Not as pow­er­ful but still quicker — 0-100km/h takes 8.2 secs. The 508 is stylish and su­per eco­nom­i­cal. It will ap­peal to those look­ing for some­thing a lit­tle dif­fer­ent from the usual Ja­panese fare.
