If you work in a high-pressure or leanly staffed environment, says journalist Ryan Heffernan, most employers couldn't care less about your personal issues. They might feign being “family friendly” but they run a business, not a crèche. Newly single and sharing custody of his one-year-old son, Heffernan found this out the hard way after losing his job and losing himself in a co-dependent relationship with booze, pills and pulling all-nighters. But Heffernan was able to turn his life around, and this week he shares his moving account of going from deadbeat dad to (almost) superdad. It's a reminder to all families of the power of positive role modelling and that what kids want most is our time and meaningful attention. They don't care what we've got going on at work. They just want us. It can be a tough juggle, balancing the needs of work and home, but success starts by looking after ourselves.
