When I think of Lulu, the first thing to pop into my mind is that riveting scene in ’67 Sidney Poitier film, To Sir, With Love, when Lulu, as teen schoolgirl “Babs” Pegg, smashes the song of the film’s title. The song, and the teenage Lulu, became a hit. A few years later, her career in full flight, Lulu replicated that success with the title song of James Bond film The Man

With the Golden Gun. In between, and long before Eurovision became popular Down Under, the nonsensically titled love song, Boom Bang-a-Bang, sung by Lulu, won the keenly contested song contest. Lulu is in Australia for the first time for a string of concerts with her friend, ex-Brit Leo Sayer. If you can’t catch Lulu in concert, the unstoppable 67-year-old Scot will be reprising her occasional role in TV pop-cult favourite Absolutely Fabulous in a new film version of the show, due out in August.
