The Courier-Mail - QWeekend

Persistence and teamwork came together for today’s exclusive cover story with Olympic legend Dawn Fraser.

Walkley Award-winning journalist Leisa Scott had been chasing this interview for some time and you can tell from reading her in-depth and beautifully written story that the Olympic legend felt comfortable opening up about a range of sensitive and traumatic subjects, from being raped twice, depression, and domestic violence to the deaths of both her parents.

The four-time gold medallist remains upbeat about life and, despite that Tokyo Games flag-stealing incident, she is passionate about the Olympic movement and remains a mentor to young athletes.

Living on the Sunshine Coast, Fraser enjoys a close relationship with her daughter and teenage grandson, loves her dogs and, you can see, clearly keeps herself active. We had planned to photograph Fraser in a pool but when Scott returned from the interview to reveal the 83-year-old’s jetski hobby we knew that was the shot. Multi-award winning Courier-Mail photographer Lachie Millard took on the job with enthusiasm, and his hard work on the day – despite the rain – delivered his incredible photographs on the cover and inside.
