DeVere eager to send message to Ange

- MARCO MONTEVERDE

BRISBANE defender Luke DeVere will have a point to prove to Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou when the Roar host Spanish club Villarreal on Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium.

Having missed the latter stages of the Roar’s 2014-15 campaign through injury, DeVere had worked hard on the training paddock in recent weeks in the hope of retaining his place in the Socceroos squad for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek on June 17 (AEST).

Overlooked when the squad was announced last Monday, DeVere suffered another blow on Saturday when he again missed out following the withdrawal of injured centre-back Trent Sainsbury.

Postecoglou instead opted for uncapped Croatia-based defender Tomislav Mrcela as Sainsbury’s replacement.

DeVere will play at least 45 minutes against Villarreal, as will another defender returning from injury, Shane Stefanutto.

But former Socceroo de- fender Jade North will miss the clash due to the appendix surgery that ended his season prematurely, while German fullback Jerome Polenz is out.

Serbian international striker Andrija Kaluderovic won’t play after being told he won’t be offered a new deal by the Roar.

“I have enjoyed my time here but this is football,” Kaluderovic told the Roar website.

The departing Frans Thijssen will coach the Roar for the final time on Wednesday, with his replacement John Aloisi to also be at the ground.
