Unhappy but PNG lifts Bougainville travel ban
PAPUA New Guinea has lifted a ban on Australians travelling to Bougainville but says it still disapproves of a diplomatic mission being built in the autonomous region.
PNG Foreign Minister Rimbink Pato instituted the ban in mid-May, after describing the mission as “outrageous” when it was announced in the federal Budget. The deci- sion to lift the ban was made after a meeting between PNG Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in Japan last week.
“Prime Minister O’Neill reaffirmed Papua New Guinea’s position that the Government does not approve of the establishment of an Australian diplomatic mission on Bougainville,” Mr Pato said.
