LUCKY ESCAPE AS HUGE AIR-CON FALLS 28 FLOORS

-

NE NEW YORK: A massive airconditioning unit being lifted by a crane to the top of a Manhattan office building broke free and fell 28 storeys landing in the middle of Madison Ave.

But only 10 people, including pedestrians, were injured in the accident which could have been much worse.

Most were struck by debris which caused minor injuries.

Officers who raced to the high-rise building, near Grand Central Station on Manhattan’s East Side, found that the crane’s payload had broken free as it was being lifted to the top of the building. It plummeted to the street, smashing parts of the building facade consisting of widening, stepped edges on the lower floors.

Mayor Bill De Blasio, called it “obviously, a very serious incident”.

“Thank God, this incident occurred at an hour of the day on a weekend when there were not too many people around,” he said.

Authorities said a full investigation was underway.
