Wasted food is a global problem

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) an estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food, or roughly 30 per cent of global production, was lost or wasted last year. This would easily feed 800 million of the world’s hungry. France is taking a radical step to minimise this problem. French people throw away between 20-30kg of food per person per year costing millions of dollars annually. Under new legislation store operators including supermarkets must donate unsold still-edible food, whether packaged or fresh, to charities or process it into animal feed
