Demolition of building after fire

-

A DERELICT Surfers Paradise building is being demolished after extensive damage from an early-morning fire. The blaze ripped through the Oak Building about 2.15am yesterday.

Fire inspector Craig Lashman said it was possible it may have been started by a small fire lit by a squatter.

“Squatters are known to go in there, so there’s the possibility the fire was started when they lit one to keep warm overnight,” he said.

Police Senior Sergeant Bruce Pearce said as the building was used by homeless people, crews would search the premises as it was being demolished.

“They will need to search the ground floor and basement parking area,” he said.

Police and emergency services remained at the scene yesterday as investigations into the cause of the blaze continued.
