I HAVE a son nearly Eddie McGuire’s age ( SM, Aug 9) who works in construction at Port Melbourne and St Kilda. The last time he visited, he referred to Muslims as “Mussies” and it was not meant to be derogatory. It’s a Melbourne thing. Muslim women in Kuraby and Underwood wear the all-black hijabs and the local kids call them “ninjas”. That’s not cruel or racist. I would call it good Aussie humour. Making up nicknames for people ending in “o” or “ie” is uniquely Australian. It’s part of our make-up. Liz Haydon, Runcorn
