STEM WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOLS
ECONDARY school groups are invited to participate in free, curriculum-mapped STEM workshops in the Science and Engineering Centre at QUT’s Gardens Point campus, Brisbane. Workshops include:
JUNIOR SECONDARY STUDENTS
Create your own solar system
Students will learn about astrophysics, the life cycle of stars and habitable zones using our solar system as a guide. They will then design their own solar system with a habitable zone and populate it with planets, moons, comets and rockets.
Sustainable energy futures
Acting as energy experts, students explore different renewable energy sources through interactive activities and assess their suitability for their allocated country, based on geographical data.
SENIOR SECONDARY STUDENTS
Thermo-chemistry and rockets
Using the Cube, students investigate rocket fuel ratios, determine exhaust velocity, thrust and specific impulse, then decide which fuel provides the most effective means of lift and why.
Balancing forces: rocket science
Students explore the effect of Newton’s and Kepler’s laws, how rocket mass, fuel mass, specific impulse, thrust and burn time affect the trajectory of rockets and what happens when it goes wrong.
