SUPER GIANT EYE ON SPACE
THE Giant Magellan Telescope Organisation (GMTO), is building one of the world’s largest telescopes at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. When completed it will have a mirror 25 metres across, about 2.5 times the size of today’s top telescopes. $500 million in funding has been committed from across the world including contributions from the Australian National University and Astronomy Australia Limited. When it is fully commissioned in 2024, the Giant Magellan Telescope will have 10 times the resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope (4 times the resolution of the James Webb Space Telescope) and 7-10 times the light-gathering power of the largest telescopes today.
