Wharfies defy Fair Work order
THE Hutchison Ports protests will continue for a sixth day today as workers gather at the Port of Brisbane, in defiance of a recommendation by the Fair Work Commission to cease industrial action.
The protesters, many of whom slept on the cargo berth overnight, were adamant they would continue to support the 41 Brisbane wharfies made redundant by text last week.
After being issued a challenge to visit the protest site, Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg said the dispute was a matter for the company, the affected workers and the Fair Work Commission.
“The bigger issue for the LNP is, do we believe the company handled this in the most compassionate and respectful way? No, they didn’t,” Mr Springborg said. “I don’t think many Queenslanders would argue that sacking people by text is a fair way to do things.”
