Avalanche kills skier on holiday
AN adventure-loving businessman was killed after he was buried under an avalanche while skiing in New Zealand’s south island.
Sydney man Roger Greville, 58, was on a heli-skiing trip near the Devil’s Staircase on the Hector Mountains south of Queenstown on Monday.
Footage showed him skiing into the avalanche’s path at the bottom of a mountain when it enveloped him.
A rescue team was then filmed frantically digging him out. He was pulled from the snow alive but died soon after.
Mr Greville, a managing director for Henderson Equity Partners specialising in Asian investments, was the only one in his group of five to be consumed by the snow.
His relatives arrived in Queenstown yesterday and requested privacy.
Police have referred the death to the coroner.
