Kerkow in golden form at Nugget

- RENARD PETERS

FOUR-TIME champion Kelvin Kerkow was the only undefeated player in the first two days of the men’s Golden Nugget at Tweed Heads.

Kerkow beat Jesse Noronha, Wayne Ruediger and Brett Wilkie to be in a comfortable position for the finals tomorrow.

Defending champion Ryan Bester beat Ruediger and Wilkie but fell 25-21 to North Irishman Jeremy Henry.

Kerkow and Bester will play this morning in a tournament-defining match.

In the other section, late call-up Leif Selby made a big impression, dominating Mark Casey 25-13 before whipping national coach Steve Glasson 25-11.

Glasson must lament Selby’s self-imposed absence from the Jackaroos.

Australian representative Aron Sherriff demolished youngster Dylan Fisher 25-2 before a 25-20 result over Queenslander Scott De Jongh, who later downed Selby.

Fisher regained his composure to beat Casey 25-20 and Glasson 25-11.

FORMER world champion Carmen Anderson set the pace for the women’s Golden Nugget, to be undefeated after three rounds.

Anderson showed her experience against world junior champion Chloe Stewart and Silver Nugget winner Sarah Boddington before beating defending champion Natasha Scott.

Last year’s Australian Open winner Anne Johns and New Zealand international Jo Edwards also were undefeated after three rounds.

Scott faces a struggle to make the finals tomorrow, with only one win against Kiwi Val Smith.

Lynsey Clarke holds second spot in her section behind Johns and their match this morning will be significant.
