Mills ‘n’ Boom as Patty returns
PATTY Mills says he had no hesitation in answering the call from Australian Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis, declaring his shoulder “close to 100 per cent” for Saturday night’s clash with New Zealand.
The San Antonio Spurs star (pictured) joined his teammates at training yesterday after flying into Melbourne from the US on Monday night.
The NBA championship winner was a late call-up to replace injured rising star Dante Exum, who has returned to Utah after suffering a serious knee injury.
“I’m more than excited to be back with the boys,” Mills said. “The situation isn’t ideal with Dante going down.
“Nonetheless this decision was about the boys, for my teammates and what we have built, not only in the last few years with ‘Drej’ (Lemanis) but what I’ve added to the side since I first came in 2006.”
Mills was originally overlooked for the Tall Black series after not making himself available for the European lead-in tour. The star guard was in the US receiving treatment on his shoulder.
Lemanis wanted to keep the same team for Europe and New Zealand so left Mills out.
Mills looked sharp yesterday as he knocked down threepointers and moved well across the court.
