- REGINA LOVIC

AN ITALIAN backpacker has been convicted following the death of three of his friends in a car accident.

Christopher Rosi, 25, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving without due care and attention in the Ayr Magistrates Court yesterday. He received a $1200 fine, no driving disqualification and a recorded conviction.

A pair of Italian sisters, Gloria and Giorgia Rastelletti, died on July 24 after the vehicle crashed near Home Hill.

Gloria, 29, Marco Pellegrini, 28, and Giuseppe Di Marco, 23, died in the incident, with Rosi behind the wheel at the time.

Giorgia and Rosi were airlifted to the Townsville Hospital in serious conditions.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist described the incident as a tragedy.

“This has caused unimaginable grief to the families,” he said.
