New banana outbreak
ONE hectare of crops will be cleared at a far north Queensland banana farm where a devastating fungal disease has been found for a second time this year.
Robson’s Bananas at Tully will be allowed to continue harvesting under strict biosecurity measures after the second discovery of the soil-borne Panama TR-4 was confirmed on Thursday. The most recent detection comes after 10ha were destroyed following positive tests in March.
Biosecurity Queensland chief biosecurity officer Dr Jim Thompson said the new discovery of the infected plant 1km from the initial outbreak was disappointing.
