Detainee law questioned
IT is unclear whether an Iranian asylum seeker who died from complications of an infected ulcer was being detained under Australian or Papua New Guinea law, a preinquest hearing has been told.
Hamid Khazaei, 24, died in Brisbane’s Mater Hospital in September 2014 after being transferred from the Manus Island detention centre the previous month, where he had received medical treatment for an infected ulcer on his left leg. At that time he had been on Manus Island since September 2013, having been transferred there after spending one month at the Christmas Island detention centre.
Mr Khazaei was flown to Port Moresby and then to Brisbane but died.
A further pre-inquest hearing, before Coroner Terry Ryan, has been set down for early December.
