Girlfriend tells how she tried to save love’s life

THE girlfriend of a Gold Coast man allegedly murdered by his best mate has described how she tried to save her boyfriend’s life as he lay bleeding from a stab wound.

Vanessa Heath told a court how she held her hands over Robbie Charles’s wound and tried to give him mouth-tomouth, while another woman did chest compressions.

Paul Gathercole is standing trial in the Supreme Court in Brisbane for the murder of his flatmate Charles, 32, at Mermaid Beach, on February 1, 2014.

Crown prosecutor Michael Lehane told the court Gathercole fatally stabbed his friend Charles in the abdomen.

Gathercole, who has pleaded not guilty, allegedly told police how he “snapped’’ after arguing with Charles, grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him. “We just had an argument and I skitzed off, I skitzed, I lost my temper. I grabbed the knife and went bang. I don’t even know why I did,” he told police in a recorded interview.

Gathercole, who has HIV, described Charles as “a top bloke” who had been compassionate about his condition. The trial is continuing.
