Thieves nab gem stash
SIX gemstones valued at tens of thousands of dollars have been stolen from a private museum in far north Queensland.
One of the topaz crystals, known as the Big Blue, is valued at $37,000 and is the largest of its kind to be found at the popular Mount Surprise gem fields, about 200km southwest of Cairns.
Police said the gems were taken from the museum between August 10 and 19.
The collection is owned by a woman who has mined topaz, tin, sapphires and gold since the late 1970s.
