HOW BENNY GOT IT WRONG ABOUT THE BRONCOS

- PAUL MALONE

WAYNE Bennett declared in March his Broncos were two years away from challenging for the title.

Yesterday, the NRL mastercoach admitted Brisbane’s incredible resurgence as a league powerhouse had changed his mind. In words that will be music to the ears of fans, Bennett said the past six months had convinced him his team has what it takes to win the 2015 premiership.

fairytale 2006 title, Bennett was unequivocal.

“These guys have shown me they are willing to pay the price,” he said.

“We have been up there in the competition lead for nearly 20 weeks … you don’t do that if you are a rubbish footy team.

“They have been wonderful this season. They just keep putting their bodieses on the line.

“I can’t talk about the six years I was away (coaching the Dragons and Newcastle), but they went close to winning it in 2011. If Darren Lockyer doesn’t break his cheekbone (in the finals), who knows what could have happened that year?

“But I’ll tell you, this is a good side now and let’s see where they go.’’
