Barrel body case appeal

A QUEENSLAND man jailed for life after he was found guilty of murdering his best friend, cementing the body in a barrel and dumping it in a river, has appealed his conviction.

The jury at Anthony Charles Oliver’s 2013 trial rejected his claims he killed Norman Cheney in self-defence, but now Oliver’s lawyers say that the jury was unfairly influenced by the judge’s improper directions.

Court of Appeal justices Catherine Holmes, Robert Gotterson and Philip Morrison reserved their decision after a hearing in Brisbane yesterday.
