Not your average Joe
JOE Burns would take whatever number selectors pulled out of the hat for him in Bangladesh, but deep down the Queenslander wants to be Australia’s new Test opener.
Burns (pictured), 25, recently starred on an Australia A reconnaissance mission in subcontinental conditions, made two 50s in the last Test he played and has a better first-class average than any other candidate.
Burns and David Warner peeled off a 139-run stand in their first outing as a one-day pairing against Ireland yesterday, and if they can carry that chemistry through the five ODIs against England, selectors will have plenty to consider when they pick the Test squad to face Bangladesh in October.
The question with Burns is whether selectors see him at the top of the Test order, at No.3 or in the middle.
“I really enjoyed batting with Davey at the start,” said Burns, who made a classy 69 in Australia’s win in Belfast.
