President fires staff


GUATEMALA CITY: Guatemala’s newly sworn-in president has demanded all top government officials resign, promising an honest and inclusive administra­tion, following the surprise resignatio­n of President Otto Perez Molina amid a widening fraud inquiry.

As Alejandro Maldonado took office, his predecesso­r was in court hearing accusation­s he was embroiled in a scheme in which businesspe­ople paid bribes to avoid import duties through Customs.

Mr Perez Molina is the first Guatemalan president to quit.
