Stadium funds essential

UNLESS Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk matches words with action – and quickly – there is a real possibility Queensland will be left behind in its pursuit of major events for Suncorp Stadium ( C-M, Sep 5).

It is hard to imagine NSW Premier Mike Baird’s $1.5 billion commitment to upgrade stadiums in Sydney didn’t come without some long-term guarantees for NRL grand finals and other blockbusters.

There is no doubting the ability of Suncorp Stadium to deliver major events. But unless the Government funds the necessary upgrades in facilities and technology, we will remain the poor cousin.

The Government needs to understand we are in a very competitive environment for major events.

These are crucial to Queensland’s economy but unless the Premier demonstrates a commitment similar to her NSW counterpart, it will be game over before the starting whistle has even sounded. Sarosh Mehta, St Lucia
