Dreamworld’s newest addition, six-week-old Kai, yesterday made his first foray on to Tiger Island to meet some of his extended family for National Threatened Species Day.

The cub was introduced to his “honorary grandma” Sita. While Kai’s mother Nika is a renowned cranky cat, Sita’s tolerant nature has seen her be a surrogate mum for several Dreamworld tigers.

Tiger Island manager Patrick Martin-Vegue said Kai, the first cub born at the park for seven years, was developing well.

“He is pretty acrobatic and very playful,” he said.

National Threatened Species Day coincides with the death of the last Tasmanian tiger at Hobart Zoo in 1936.
